SUMMARY:Art and Jazz: The Iconic Imagery of Blue Note Records
DESCRIPTION:Everyone who appreciates art and jazz music will love meeting vocalist and historian Elena Gilliam. She will share the history of art appearing on the spectacular album covers of Blue Note Records. \nGilliam\, a longtime jazz vocalist\, performs locally at The Drake and Skyloft\, and at Campus Jax in Newport Beach. Her productions have ranged from tributes to Martin Luther King Jr.\, to Ella Fitzgerald\, and Lena Horne. Her upcoming premier concert\, Shall We Dance\, will be performed at Irvine Barclay Theater on April 7. \nGilliam’s Art Talk will include a slide-show of cover art by Blue Note Records. The label\, founded in 1939\, became iconic by introducing groundbreaking early jazz musicians including Art Blakey\, Miles Davis\, Thelonius Monk and many others. The development of unique\, and now highly collectible\, album covers played an integral role in the promotion of this “new sound”. Graphic designer Reid Miles and photographer Francis Wolff made history in the 1940s-1960s creating trendsetting designs and elements still in use today. “Their bold use of color\, intimate photography\, and meticulous typography came to define the look of jazz\,” said Robin Kinross of Eye Magazine. Even a young Andy Warhol was commissioned by Blue Note Records. Attendees will learn about these amazing covers\, their creators\, and how the visuals became an integral part in the evolution of jazz. \nAs a bonus\, everyone will receive a post-event certificate for 15%-off food at nearby Lumberyard Restaurant. \nAdvance registration is required. \nSPEAKER:  Find information about Elena’s upcoming concert –> https://www.elenagilliam.com/shows \nFEE: Free to LOCA Members: Advance registration is required\, email: loca@LOCAarts.org / Non-Members $20 \nLocation: LCAD Gallery\, 374 Ocean Ave. Metered parking on the street. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Career Retrospective with Andrew Myers ~ Registration closed this Art Talk is sold out
DESCRIPTION:Art lovers of any background will be mesmerized by this show-and-tell presentation by globally renowned artist Andrew Myers. He will will share stories from his experimental student days at Laguna College of Art and Design\, to his years as a representational sculptor\, when he created figurative bronzes for Saint Catherine of Sienna Church\, and “The Shopper” for City of Laguna Beach. Myers will share insights on his series of life size figure drawings\, defaced with scribblings of social commentary\, satire\, and humor. Lastly\, he will discuss his signature Screw Art series\, which although a pun\, describes his collection of wall relief illustrations literally composed of thousands of screws. Among them are narrative pieces\, portraits\, and geometric sculptures that magically transform from an “X” to and “O” when viewed from different positions. As a special treat for LOCA\, Myers will present materials from his studio including his overworked paint brushes that compose certain sculptures\, and he will demonstrate his screwing techniques. \nWhile Myers has had his share of road-bumps\, such as having a public sculpture in Dallas take a bullet\, he’s been embraced by blue-chip clients including Audi\, who commissioned him to use automotive screws for a piece presented at a car show in Frankfurt Germany. \nUpon conclusion\, everyone will receive a post-event certificate for 15%-off food at nearby Lumberyard Restaurant. \nAdvance registration is required\,  free to members of LOCA Arts Education. visitors $20.   Metered parking on surrounding streets. \nWebsite  https://www.andrewmyersartgallery.com/andrew-myers-art \nFEE: Free to LOCA Members: Registration is closed this art talk is sold out!

SUMMARY:Jayne Dion Shares Secrets of Scenery Design
DESCRIPTION:Everyone who appreciates unique art careers will love meeting sculptor Jayne Dion. She will share behind-the-scenes stories and photos of her career both as a fine artist and scenery designer. \nMuch of her scenic work is presented as large scale seasonal displays at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa where she has been a resident artist for more than 20 years. The experience has made her an expert in creating substructures and armatures\, carving foams\, and using adhesives\, paints\, and sealers in creating dramatic larger-than-life tableau’s that thrill thousands of plaza visitors annually. “Part of the challenge is knowing where the pieces will be installed\, and coming up with solutions to get them from the shop to the display destination\,” she said. Examples she will discuss include holiday displays including a six foot Faberge’ egg. \nLocally\, Dion is noted for exhibiting at Festival of Arts for several years. SUMMARY:LOCA Art Talk ~ Backstage - Creating Recycled Fashion
DESCRIPTION:Backstage – Creating Recycled Fashion \nDiscover the fun of up-scaling discards into wearable art \nWhat do artists do with a roll of duct tape and some trash? “Turn it into a dress and top it with a Tiara” said Elizabeth McGhee. She is among several artists who will share a behind-the-scenes look at creating recycled couture. Everyone is encouraged to arrive wearing a festive hat to celebrate the fashionista theme. The event is presented in collaboration with The Artists Fund at Festival of Arts. \nMcGhee’s fashions have won multiple awards at the Recycled Runway fashion shows\, presented annually at Festival of Arts. All who wear hats may pose for photos\, and qualify for a fun prize drawing.\nRefreshments will be served\, and all will receive a coupon for a post-event discount at Lumberyard Restaurant.\nRegistration is required.
