SUMMARY:Decorate a Tile for LOCA’s Community Mosaic
DESCRIPTION:LOCA Arts Education invites the public to take part in creating a wall-sized community mosaic artwork. Adults and families\, ages 10-up\, will decorate tiles at open studio workshops. \nThe mosaic\, designed by tile artist Mike Tauber\, will feature sea lions over an ocean-blue background. The scene will be made up of about 120 individual tiles\, decorated by citizens in the workshops\, with a choice of ocean-themed subjects\, such as tidepool creatures\, bubbles\, octopus\, and fish. Rather than realistic\, it will read like a fantasy quilt. The easy\, beginner-friendly process involves drawing a design or pattern on tile\, tracing with a wax pencil\, and painting in the tile with glazes specified by Tauber. \nAfter firing\, the tiles will be mounted on panels. The finished art will be available for viewing at Laguna Beach Community and Susi Q Senior Center in late summer\, as part of the “Cultural Creativity” exhibit presented by Gallery Q at the Susi Q. \n Workshops are open-studio style\, allowing participants to come and go as desired\, during open hours. Final seating is 6:00pm – participants should allow for a 30-minute work time\, ages 10 and up. Cost is free\, registration is required. email: loca@locaarts.org to register \nThe workshops are funded to LOCA by a Cultural Arts Grant from City of Laguna Beach\, and a donation from Tim Kippen and Ileana Frometa Grillo. \n

SUMMARY:LOCA artists create artwork at ANGELS’ Stadium - Now on Auction!
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, July 19\, Hugo Rivera and Fernando Micheli created artwork in front of Angels fans during a 6 to 3 win over the New York Yankees! \nA master of plein air painting\, Micheli set up his easel on the terrace of the Diamond Club\, capturing the surrounding scene in delicate brush strokes. Known for dashing off large canvases before a live audience\, Rivera went higher up into the stands to give passersby a chance to see the artistic process in real time. \n“It’s a way for artists to stay in contact with the public\, earn a bit of money and keep art alive\,” said LOCA Vice President Rich Fair. “I was looking for ways to expand the reach of artists\, and it dawned on me there could be an opportunity there\,” he said on Tuesday. “The idea is to get art out there\, and I don’t see why we couldn’t go out to Angels Stadium. The Angels thought it fit very well with their mission.” \nIn a news release issued ahead of Wednesday’s game day\, Angels Baseball Foundation President Dennis Kuhl expressed enthusiasm over the joint effort. “We are excited to partner with LOCA as they join us at Angels Stadium to capture the ballpark experience through art\,” he said. “These one-of-a-kind paintings will be available for fans to purchase with proceeds to benefit both LOCA and Angels Baseball Foundation.” \nPaintings by Fernando Micheli and Hugo Rivera are now on the LA Angel’s Auction Website. USE THE LINKS BELOW TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE AUCTIONS. \nAuction closes AUGUST 9th. \nTo view and bid on Fernando Micheli’s LA Angel’s auction artwork CLICK HERE \nTo view and bid on Hugo Rivera’s LA Angel’s auction artwork CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:LOCA Artists to Paint at Angels Game
DESCRIPTION:LOCA Arts Education is partnering with the Los Angeles Angels and the Angels Baseball Foundation in providing live painting demonstrations at Angels Stadium. Fans will enjoy watching artists paint during the game on Wednesday July 19\, as the Angels host the New York Yankees. Game time is 4:07pm. \nThe artists\, positioned at locations throughout the stadium are Fernando Micheli\, and Hugo Rivera.  Micheli\, a plein air and landscape artist\, will be painting a scene of the stadium in all its glory\, and Rivera\, a muralist\, will be painting a figure on a dramatic 5 foot canvas\, in his expressionist wet-on-wet painting style.  Micheli is an exhibitor at the Sawdust Festival\, and Rivera owns a gallery in Laguna Beach. \n“We are excited to partner with LOCA as they join us at Angels Stadium to capture the ballpark experience through art\,” said Angels Baseball Foundation President Dennis Kuhl. SUMMARY:Art and Jazz: The Iconic Imagery of Blue Note Records
DESCRIPTION:Everyone who appreciates art and jazz music will love meeting vocalist and historian Elena Gilliam. She will share the history of art appearing on the spectacular album covers of Blue Note Records. \nGilliam\, a longtime jazz vocalist\, performs locally at The Drake and Skyloft\, and at Campus Jax in Newport Beach. Her productions have ranged from tributes to Martin Luther King Jr.\, to Ella Fitzgerald\, and Lena Horne. Her upcoming premier concert\, Shall We Dance\, will be performed at Irvine Barclay Theater on April 7. \nGilliam’s Art Talk will include a slide-show of cover art by Blue Note Records. The label\, founded in 1939\, became iconic by introducing groundbreaking early jazz musicians including Art Blakey\, Miles Davis\, Thelonius Monk and many others. The development of unique\, and now highly collectible\, album covers played an integral role in the promotion of this “new sound”. Graphic designer Reid Miles and photographer Francis Wolff made history in the 1940s-1960s creating trendsetting designs and elements still in use today. “Their bold use of color\, intimate photography\, and meticulous typography came to define the look of jazz\,” said Robin Kinross of Eye Magazine. Even a young Andy Warhol was commissioned by Blue Note Records. Attendees will learn about these amazing covers\, their creators\, and how the visuals became an integral part in the evolution of jazz. \nAs a bonus\, everyone will receive a post-event certificate for 15%-off food at nearby Lumberyard Restaurant. \nAdvance registration is required. \nSPEAKER:  Find information about Elena’s upcoming concert –> https://www.elenagilliam.com/shows \nFEE: Free to LOCA Members: Advance registration is required\, email: loca@LOCAarts.org / Non-Members $20 \nLocation: LCAD Gallery\, 374 Ocean Ave. Metered parking on the street. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
