Backstage – Creating Recycled Fashion
Discover the fun of up-scaling discards into wearable art
What do artists do with a roll of duct tape and some trash? “Turn it into a dress and top it with a Tiara” said Elizabeth McGhee. She is among several artists who will share a behind-the-scenes look at creating recycled couture. Everyone is encouraged to arrive wearing a festive hat to celebrate the fashionista theme. The event is presented in collaboration with The Artists Fund at Festival of Arts.
McGhee’s fashions have won multiple awards at the Recycled Runway fashion shows, presented annually at Festival of Arts. Similar shows, presented at Laguna Art Museum and Sawdust Festival, follow a theme of up-cycling discarded or waste materials into couture fashions, thereby reducing demand on resources and sending a message of conservation.
McGhee’s co-presenters include watercolorist NC Swan – a fellow Recycled Runway exhibitor, and Carole Boller – chair of The Artists Fund Professional Development Committee.
Attendees will enjoy a close up view of several dresses, and a “behind-the-scenes” look at how artists may find materials, assemble, and fit them for a live model on a runway. All who wear hats may pose for photos, and qualify for a fun prize drawing.
Refreshments will be served, and all will receive a coupon for a post-event discount at Lumberyard Restaurant.
